Part Three: Remember Your WHY
When you first started your business you had lots of energy and passion and were highly fueled by your desire to be your own boss and take your finances to a new level. You probably also wanted to make a difference in some capacity through your product or service. These reasons constituted your WHY and helped fuel the countless hours it took to get your business going and thriving.
Over time, however, that big, important WHY may have gotten lost in the jumble of business meetings, client follow-ups, invoicing and writing proposals. In other cases, your business may have changed drastically as you adapted to market conditions or settled into a niche, and your WHY may not have adapted with your business.
Whatever the case, losing sight of your WHY can definitely cause you to lose your initial mooring, causing you to feel adrift, confused about your business’s purposes and, ultimately, unmotivated. Luckily, there’s an easy solution. You simply have to find your WHY and make sure it is still relevant to your current business and goals.
To rediscover your WHY, ask yourself two important questions:
- What impact or contribution do you want to make through your business?
- What personal goals do you want to accomplish through your business?
When you understand the larger overall impact you want your business to have and the goals you want to reach, you’ll be able to better target you ideal consumers, tailor your products and determine if each thing on your to-do list is supporting your WHY. Knowing your WHY will also keep you inspired and motivated and help you direct the growth of your business. For example, if you are a personal image consultant, then one big WHY for you might be to help empower women to feel beautiful and confident about themselves. This may lead you to such business goals as:
- Establish a steady client base of 10 women each month
- Partner with a local nonprofit that helps women rebuild their lives
- Become the go-to person for local wedding planners to refer to assist their brides
- Create three “looks” for your target audience each season
- Start a blog that discusses important body images topics, such as portrayals of women in the media, eating disorders, etc…
Can you see how each of these activities supports the WHY and how they all naturally align with one another? It’s easy to build momentum when you understand why you got into business and why you are working so hard each day.
